What a weekend this has been! Snow, sleet, cloudy and gray skies, strong winds and low temperatures. All of this caused a lot of problems for most of us. Thank goodness I took myself to the grocery store Wednesday.
Thursday, Helen and I went to the senior center for lunch and a game of TIC and headed for home when the rain started. And I haven’t been out of the house since then. I don’t have cabin fever yet, but maybe you do. Because of the schools being closed, probably many mothers will be glad when the snow melts, the roads are driveable and school is back in session. Believe me, I can remember the days.
Next door to me, Emily Coor and two of her girl friends were busy Sunday afternoon building a snowman. Although I didn’t see it, I heard it was about six feet tall. They took pictures of it and sent them in to Channel 5. Maybe the snowman will be chosen to be put on the arr.
Another Viney Grover, Linda Whittaker, has taken a photography course and now belongs to a photographer’s organization. In November she took pictures at the Viney Grove Methodist Church’s Thanksgiving dinner at the community center and took pictures of the children in the Christmas Eve program. They were all so good.
In the fall, Linda entered a competition in which barns were the subject of thepictures. Out of the three pictures she sent in, two of them won prizes. Winning first place was a picture of a barn she discovered near Ozark; and the second picture, winning ninth place, was a barn located near her mother’s house in Van Buren. Now all the winning pictures are on display at the Art Center of the Ozarks in Springdale.
The EHC ladies are so appreciative of the hard work that the men at Abshiers Heating did to install the new furnace the first of last week. Also, we are deeply grateful to the many businesses and neighbors who contributed to the purchase of this unit.We will enjoy the heat it puts out on cold, windy days.
The first year I wrote the Viney Grove News, I cut the columns out and put them in a folder. Sunday afternoon I got the folder out to see what I had said 20 years ago. So, in the Thursday, Feb. 1, publication, which is today as I’m writing, there had been frost on the ground Monday when I wrote the news, but we evidently needed rain. The Countrymen had played for community night and were joined by Harold Bartholomew on his steel guitar. There was a flu bug going around. So many I wrote about are no longer with us - Ernie Lossing,Nora Carnahan, Lorena Fleeman, Mrs. Howard Hooker, Grace Carnahan, Eldon and Dorothy Wetzel. They each have been missed, but as I read about them, I remembered so many good things about each of them.
I did learn that Lynn Wetzel had a birthday thelast week of January. So, happy birthday, Lynn, and best wishes for this year.
Have a good week, stay well and keep warm.
