Ice Cream Social Set This Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE -- Washington County Historical Society's Annual Ice Cream Social is set for Saturday, Aug. 16, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the historical Headquarters House, 118 West Dickson Street, across from the new Washington County Courthouse parking deck.

Tickets are $5 per person, with all proceeds going to the Washington County Historical Society and its annual projects.

For the past 65 years, the Washington County Historical Society has published a quarterly award winning historical publication, FLASHBACK. WCHS has also promoted Arkansas Statehood Day every June and helped to preserve and protect historically valuable properties in the county.

More than 75 donated cakes from cooks, chefs, politicians and historians will be served up with several flavors of Highland Dairy ice cream at the Ice Cream Social on Saturday.

Fayetteville attorney Vincent Chaddick is the chairman of this year's Ice Cream Social. The committee is still soliciting home-made desserts for the event. If you want to donate a dessert contact Chaddick at [email protected]

J.B. Hogan of Fayetteville is the current president of the Washington County Historical Society and encouraged the entire family to come and visit the Headquarters House and gardens maintain by the Washington County Master Gardeners' group.

The most recent issue of FLASHBACK, the summer 2014, No. 2 issue, features a tribute to a Washington County pauper, by Anthony Wappel, Washington County archivist; two stories focusing on Prairie Grove, written by Susan Parks-Spencer. The first of which is a historical nomination of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Prairie Grove and then an interesting historical nomination story on the Prairie Grove Cemetery.

Rounding out the issue is a history of Farmington Schools written by Deidre Steele Nash and Jane Buchanan Steele. The Society publishes four booklets each year on the history of Washington County. Membership levels are also available.
