LINCOLN -- It's time for students and parents to get ready for school and the Lincoln Back To School Bonanza can help, said Gary Lunsford, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, sponsor of the event.

About 250 children were helped last year, according to Lunsford. This will be the fifth year a bonanza has been held in Lincoln.

"We will have backpacks, shoes and socks," Lunsford said. "We won't have school supplies this year because the district is going to help with those."

Free hair cuts, dental screenings and Washington County Sheriff's Office will be there to provide children-Identity-cards for parents, said Lunsford.

"All the hair salons here send at least one hair stylist to do hair cuts," Lunsford said, adding Family Dentistry will have someone there to do the free dental screenings.

Lincoln Kiwanis Club presented $371.50 to Lunsford last week to help support the Back to School Bonanza, said Lynn Thomas, president of Kiwanis.

"This money was collected weekly by Kiwanis members and their guests during April, May and June through the Happy Dollars Program in which members celebrate "happy" things that they are enjoying in their lives and in their community," Thomas said.

"We were glad to receive a check from Kiwanis for the bonanza," Lunsford said. "It will help us out. We appreciate their help."

The event is for Lincoln and Morrow area students only. It is set for 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Community Center on the downtown square.

"We have people putting out flyers around town and we're ready to go with it," Lunsford said.

Volunteers from Central United Methodist and students will be volunteering at the bonanza.
