LINCOLN -- Whatever sport is in season, Sterling Morphis is up for it.

Right now it's golf season for Lincoln High School and the freshman has been consistently posting the Wolves' best rounds.

"I just love any kind of sports," Morphis said. "At the bigger schools, guys have to concentrate on one sport a lot but at a smaller school like Lincoln you can get a chance to play everything. That's how I like it."

Morphis is expected to be the starting point guard on the ninth-grade basketball team, a heavy contributor in football and a starter on the varsity baseball team in the spring.

"It's hard for me to give him too many compliments because he is my cousin," said Lincoln golf coach Spencer Hulse. "But he's a really good kid. He's a good all-around athlete and he lives and breathes sports. That's kind of how I was when I was his age."

Morphis says he has mostly been able to work on his golf game on Fridays and weekends, but he gets in practice when he can at Valley View Golf Club.

"My putting and chipping has been pretty good, but I really need to work on my driving," Morphis said. "It's definitely where I need the work."

Hulse said Morphis' work ethic made him shoot up to the top spot in the Lincoln lineup.

"He's a good all-around athlete, but you can tell he really wants to be a golfer," Hulse said. "He didn't have a whole lot of golf experience coming into this year, but he's been practicing a lot this summer and it's been showing on the course.

"He doesn't wait for the team practices, but he practices a lot on his own time."

While most of his other sports are team oriented, the golf game is more of an individual pursuit.

"When you are out on the course, if you mess up, it's all on you," Morphis said. "There is no one to blame it on. That's good and bad, it's just different. But I enjoy it."

Morphis said his best competition rounds so far have been 46 in nine holes and a 90 on 18 holes.

"He has come a long ways in a short time," Hulse said. "He has four years of golf left and so it's going to be fun to see just how good he can be when he is a senior if he puts in the time on it."
