FARMINGTON -- Farmington's newest police officer joined the force June 23 and will complete field training with veteran officers before going out on patrol alone.

Dustin Long, 28, is a 2005 graduate of Prairie Grove High School. He attended the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in 2012, and worked eight years for Washington County Sheriff's Office, first with the juvenile detention facility and then with Washington County Detention Center.

Like many in law enforcement, Long said he grew up wanting to be a police officer. He applied for the Farmington position because he said he knew Chief Brian Hubbard and was good friends with officer Jimmy Brotherton.

"I was ready to get out of jail and work with the other aspect on patrol," Long said.

His field training will be with Cpls. James Bertorella and Geoff Kimball.

Long replaces police officer Ira Coker, who resigned to pursue other endeavors.
