Newspaper Receives 19 Awards

First Place In General Excellence

NORTH LITTLE ROCK -- The Washington County Enterprise-Leader received 19 awards including first place in General Excellence among smaller weeklies during the Arkansas Press Association convention at North Little Rock on July 10.

The awards were presented for publication year 2014 in the APA Better Newspaper Editorial contest, which drew 1,874 entries, including 830 from 20 dailies and 1,044 from 33 weeklies with the Colorado Press Association judging the contest. A press release from the APA describes the award for general excellence as the most prestigious award from the APA.

The Enterprise-Leader received eight first place awards, six second place awards, one third place award and four honorable mention awards.

First place awards -- General Excellence - Pat Harris, Mark Humphrey and Lynn Kutter; Best Special Issue or Section, Protect and Serve - Lynn Kutter and Mark Humphrey; Coverage of Business/Agriculture - Lynn Kutter and Pat Harris; General Interest Column - Pat Harris, Living With Autism; Sports Feature Story - Mark Humphrey, Parental Pressure To Perform; Picture Page/Photo Essay - Mark Humphrey, Buzzer-Beating 3-Pointer; Single News Photograph - Lynn Kutter, Park Revisits Civil War History; and Freelance Writing - Ben Madrid, Numbers, Statistics And Banners.

Second place awards -- Coverage of Health/Medical - Lynn Kutter and Mark Humphrey; Feature Story - Lynn Kutter, Couple Changes Lifestyle; Sports News Story - Mark Humphrey, Sinking Battleship Van Buren; Headline Writing - Mark Humphrey, Winging In The Rain; Single Sports Feature Photograph - Mark Humphrey, Carrying His Weight; and Picture Page/Photo Essay - Lynn Kutter, Civil War Battles.

Third place award -- News/Political Column - Maylon Rice, 'Nibbling' At Private Option.

Honorable Mention Awards --Best Special Issue/Section - Pat Harris, Mark Humphrey and Lynn Kutter, Apple Festival; Headline Writing - Mark Humphrey, Grand Theft Apaches; Single Feature Photograph - Lynn Kutter, Clothesline Fair; and Single Sports Action Photograph - Mark Humphrey, Sinking Battleship Van Buren.
