Heroes To The Rescue

Children learned about all kinds of heroes through music, books, special guests and programs during the 2015 summer reading program, sponsored by Washington County Library System.

The theme for this summer's program, held each week from June 15-July 22, was "Every Hero Has a Story."

The program ended last week but over the summer, children have focused on heroes who go the extra mile. Some of these heroes have been firefighters, police officers, working dogs, a cowboy and environmentalists who protect the planet. One speaker taught children about heroes of the Civil War. They also witnessed science projects and experiments, played games and were treated to popular singing groups.

Sherry Rodgers, children's librarian for the county system, estimates more than 700 children attended the programs in Farmington, Prairie Grove and Lincoln.

Door prizes have been popular each week and some of the prizes awarded to children have included tickets to Locomotion and a Naturals' baseball game, toys and other items donated by area businesses.

"We've had a great, fun summer learning about heroes," Rodgers said.

She now begins preparing for the weekly storytime at community libraries. These will begin in September, the week after Labor Day.
