Weather Causes Farmington Accidents

FARMINGTON -- A Chevrolet Blazer traveling west Sunday morning on Main Street in Farmington swerved and knocked down a utility pole in front of Lewis Automotive at 323 E. Main St., according to Cpl. James Bertorella with Farmington Police Department.

Ryan Saver of Lincoln stated he was driving about 35 m.p.h. around 8:30 a.m. in the outside lane when he hit slush and began sliding. Saver did not want to hit the car in the next lane so he swerved toward the side of the road, hit the pole, knocking it down. Police blocked traffic going both ways on Main Street because a power line fell across the road.

The pole provided power only to Lewis Automotive. Crews with SWEPCO finished replacing the pole and hanging up the power line around 1 p.m. that day, Bertorella said. The accident caused extensive damage to the front of the Blazer. No one was injured.

In another weather related accident, Farmington's new police truck slid on black ice on Double Springs Road, striking the bumper of a mini-van that had slid off the road into a ditch, said Capt. Michael Thompson on Monday. No one was hurt and damages were minor to both vehicles, Thompson said.

Officer Ira Coker was driving the police truck and northbound on Double Springs when he approached the van that had slid into the northbound ditch, according to Kelly Cantrell with Washington County Sheriff's Office. When Coker applied his brakes, the truck slid and hit the van. The accident occurred on the hill just beyond the former Campbell Soup factory. The Sheriff's Office worked the accident since it involved a Farmington police vehicle.

"He tried to maneuver on ice and couldn't maneuver," Thompson said.

The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. that night. A teenager had been driving the mini-van home from work, according to his father, who expressed appreciation to many people who volunteered to help pull the vehicle out of the ditch.
