PRAIRIE GROVE -- Monday night's school board meeting concluded a drawn-out process Prairie Grove superintendent of schools Allen Williams discreetly did not hurry along.

The school's vacant athletic director position was filled with the Board approving Williams' recommendation to hire Tommy Roy, who has been a history teacher and state championship girls soccer coach at Shiloh Christian.

The job opening generated a lot of interest with a search committee composed of Reba Holmes (Prairie Grove Middle School principal), Williams and Ron Bond (Prairie Grove High School principal) reviewing 42 applications received. Of that number, the search committee narrowed the group down and interviewed 9 finalists. Strong candidates emerged and were interviewed from within the Prairie Grove district including: John Elder, assistant football and head boys track and field coach; Dustin Beck, assistant seventh grade football and head softball coach; Kevin Froud, head girls basketball coach; and Joey Sorters, high school assistant principal.

In addition to Roy, finalists from outside the district included: James Smith, of Ashdown, head basketball coach, assistant varsity track and field coach, and assistant athletic director; Brad Stamps, Springdale High School head basketball coach; Jody Jenkins, principal and athletic director at Ozark High School; and Jim Stanley, head football coach at Vilonia. Prairie Grove's athletic director's position has remained vacant throughout the 2014-2015 school year after the passing of long time Prairie Grove athletic director and former coach Mike Green on Aug. 31.
