LINCOLN -- Author Dave Pelzer who wrote a book about his experiences being abused by his mother as a child will address Lincoln teachers and staff as they return to school Aug. 8.

Pelzer wrote "A Child Called It," which is an account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. Pelzer will speak from 10-11:30 a.m. at Lincoln Middle School auditorium. His address is open to the public and the school has invited area teachers to hear Pelzer speak.

Along with "A Child Called It," Pelzer also has written other life changing books and has been honored as one of the Outstanding Young Persons of the World. In his book, he writes about how his courage, determination and spirit helped him to persevere and survive the abuse.

Mary Ann Spears, Lincoln superintendent, said the auditorium holds more than 500 people and she would like to see the facility full for the event.

Teachers new to Lincoln School District will show up Aug. 4 and 5 for orientation and returning teachers will return Aug. 8. The first day of class for students is Aug. 15.

Spears shared the back to school calendar with Lincoln School Board members at their July 18 meeting.

In other business at the meeting, Spears said the school will be able to transfer $420,000 to its building fund, based on the district's year-end balance for 2015-16. After paying costs of ongoing school projects, the building fund should have about $940,000 in it for the new year.

"I feel pretty good going forward that we will have a sizable amount in our building fund," Spears told board members, meeting in Lincoln High School library.

Spears said costs for projects over the summer included $155,000 for middle school improvements, $145,000 to remodel bathrooms and $130,000 for tile work. All bills for school projects should be paid by the end of September.

Following executive session, Lincoln School Board accepted the resignation of four high school teachers who have taken jobs with other school districts: Nathan Little, Shannon Little, Alison Vowell and band director Billy Mere resigned in July.

Spears said the district already is receiving applications for the vacancies.

"I'm confident we'll hire and be fine," Spears said after the board meeting.
