PRAIRIE GROVE -- The new postmaster for Prairie Grove Post Office has 21 years' experience with the U.S. Postal Service, starting in Seattle, Wash., as a letter carrier.
Wanda Bieber took the oath of office last week, standing outside the Post Office building at 221 W. Buchanan St., with friends and family gathered around to celebrate her promotion.
Tim Doc Marion, manager of Post Office Operations for Northwest Arkansas, gave the oath of office.
"She's a great lady and will be a great asset to this community," Marion said. "There are only so many postmasters in the U.S. at one time. This is an elite group and with it comes a lot of responsibility."
Bieber joins the ranks of famous Americans who served as postmasters, including U.S. presidents Abraham Lincoln and Harry S. Truman, Marion said.
Bieber worked 15 years as a postal carrier in Seattle and then two years as a Post Office supervisor in Fort Smith and six years as postal supervisor in Springdale. This is her first time to serve as a postmaster. She started June 6.
Bieber said she has enjoyed working for the Post Office because of personal contact with others.
"Delivering mail and being a supervisor, you work with the people and the community," Bieber said. "I go to church in Prairie Grove and a lot of family members are close to here. I couldn't be happier."
Bieber said she came to Arkansas because of family ties. Her father's family lived in northwest Arkansas and growing up, she spent her summers here. Her parents moved to the area and then her five siblings relocated. She said she was the last one to finally move to the area. She lives in Morrow.
