Farmington's baseball team suffered an 8-4 loss against Sylvan Hills in the first round of the Class 5A State Tournament at Harrison on May 12.

Junior right-hander Tyler Gregg struck out 9, walked 3 and allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits in six innings of work. But three errors ended up leading to five unearned runs as the Cardinals ended their season with a 19-9 record.

"Tyler pitched well enough to give us a chance," said Farmington coach Jay Harper. "We pitched well enough to win and we thought we had it in control until the [fourth inning].

"But we made a couple of mistakes that really hurt us and against a No. 1 seed, you can't make those mistakes and expect to win."

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Blake Madewell and Ryan Larkin singled and scored. Tyler Gregg's bases loaded walk scored Madewell and Kelton Price drove in Larkin on a sacrifice fly.

After Sylvan Hills plated a pair of runs to even the score at 2-all, Caleb Reagan punched a ground ball single through the left side of the infield to lead off the top of the fourth inning. He later scored on Trenton McChristian's bunt.

Back-to-back singles by Madewell and Blake Putnam then set the stage for Gregg, who picked up his second RBI on a single to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

But it was short lived as the Bears answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fifth to create the final margin.

Madewell and Reagan each had two hits to pace Farmington's seven-hit attack.

Sylvan Hills went on to win its next two games to advance to the state championship. The Bears are scheduled to take on Magnolia at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Baum Stadium.
