Tigers Extend Win-Streak

GENTRY -- A plan to open the game with an onside kick backfired on Gentry with Prairie Grove's potent offense starting at midfield.

Prairie Grove (8-0, 5-0 4A-1) outgained Gentry (2-5, 0-5), accumulating 535 yards of total offense with 389 rushing and 146 passing to Gentry's 362 yards during the Tigers' 62-28 victory at Pioneer Stadium Friday.

Kyle Sam capped the Tigers' first drive with a 14-yard touchdown run, sparking a 20-0 first quarter lead. DeMarkus Cooper caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zeke Laird, who added another touchdown toss to Clay Fidler of 4 yards pass from Laird. Cooper ran in the 2-point conversion. Next came a wild sequence. Gentry had a field goal attempt blocked with the Tigers taking over at the Gentry 17. Going the other way, a Prairie Grove fumble was recovered by Gentry at the Prairie Grove 47. The Pioneers didn't hold onto the ball for long, fumbling the ball back to Prairie Grove at their 41. The Tigers pulled the trigger with senior Isaac Disney reining in a 59-yard touchdown pass from Zeke Laird. Zeke Laird's conversion pass was completed to Fidler for a two points and a 28-0 Tiger lead. The Pioneers closed to 28-8 when junior quarterback Jon Faulkenberry capped a 65-yard drive, avoiding a rush and running 22 yards to the end zone. Gentry recovered an onside kick at their 49, but the Tiger defense didn't yield another score in the first half.

In the third quarter, Prairie Grove kicked off to Gentry with the Pioneers setting up offense at their 38. A Pioneer fumble was recovered by the Tigers at the Gentry 40. Prairie Grove then scored on Dustin Burton's 48-yard pass reception from Zeke Laird. Fidler booted the extra-point. Less than three minutes later, Reed Orr's 8-yard run extended the Tiger lead to 41-7 at the 8:34 mark of the third period. Gentry answered with Pioneer receiver Cole Cripps (7 catches, 184 yards) catching a 39-yard touchdown pass from Faulkenberry. Prairie Grove began the next drive at their own 37, using a long pass to advance the ball to Gentry's 20-yard line. Zeke Laird capped the march from there with a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Orr caught Zeke Laird's pass for a 2-point conversion. The wild third quarter, in which both teams combined for 35 points finally ended on a Faulkenberry 27-yard touchdown run.

Leading 49-21, to start the fourth quarter, Prairie Grove added a touchdown 10 seconds into the final period on Anthony Johnson's 33 yard run to daylight. Late in the quarter another Tiger runner was stripped by Gentry and the ball was returned to the Gentry 35. The Pioneers would score with Cripps receiving a 48-yard pass from Faulkenberry with 1:33 left in the contest. The Pioneers weren't out of the woods yet and Aaron Preston took the football to the house on a 47-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring with 19 seconds on the game clock. Zeke Laird kicked the extra-point and Prairie Grove prevailed, 62-28.

For the Tigers, Sam rushed for 126 yards on seven carries. Johnson had 98 yards on eight carries. Preston gained 84 yards on 6 carries. Disney caught 6 passes for 118 yards. Faulkenberry topped Gentry with 103 rushing yards. Friday, the Tigers entertain Berryville at home. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
