Company Requests Parking Lot Approval

FARMINGTON -- Farmington Planning Commission will consider a large-scale development plan to put in a large parking lot behind Discount Tobacco on Main Street for trucks owned by Little Field Oil Co.

The request will be on the agenda for the commission's meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at City Hall. A public hearing on the plan will be held first.

Bill Hanesworth, chief operating officer with Little Field, said the company has owned the land for several years and is proposing a simple project to be able to park two-three fuel trucks and some pickup trucks overnight. Typically, he said the fuel trucks would not have any fuel in them.

The company, located in Fort Smith, delivers fuel to northwest Arkansas and this lot would give it a place to park trucks in between Fort Smith and northwest Arkansas, Hanesworth said. Driving back and forth is very expensive, Hanesworth added.

Geoffrey Bates with Bates & Associates in Fayetteville is the engineer for the project.

The large-scale development plan includes a detention pond for drainage, a fence around the property as well as a privacy fence in the back. It also has landscaping as required by city ordinance.

The plan calls for a gravel parking lot. City ordinance requires parking lots to be paved and the owner is asking for a variance from this requirement, Bates said.

The property is located at the corner of Highway 170 and Main Street.
