Farmington Man Arrested On Battery Charge

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Farmington man was arrested Sept. 19 after police said he beat another man with a tire iron, according to a preliminary report.

Demetrus Shelley, 33, of 196 Killdeer Drive, was arrested in connection with second-degree battery, a felony.

The beaten man was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head, back, arms and fingers, the report shows. Sgt. Craig Stout, police spokesman, said in an email the beaten man was treated and released from the hospital Monday.

The beaten man told police Shelley drove an SUV to 969 W. Holly St. around 1:49 p.m. Monday and started staring at him, according to the report. The man asked Shelley who he was looking for, but Shelley yelled "some expletives," according to the report. The men started yelling and cursing at each other, the report shows.

The two men then fought, throwing punches at each other, according to the report. Shelley ran back to his vehicle, got out a tire iron and hit the other man with it, according to the report.

A detective with the 4th Judicial Drug Task Force was in the area and saw Shelley wield the tire iron at the other man, according to the report. The detective was on his way to the fight when Shelley got into his car and drove away, according to the report.

Police found Shelley at Regency 7 Motel at 675 S. Shiloh Drive where they also found an SUV with a tire iron in sight, according to the report. Video also showed Shelley driving the vehicle to the hotel, according to the report.

Shelley denied being involved in the fight, according to the report. He was taken to Washington County Detention Center on Sept. 19 with a $10,000 bond. According to online jail records, Shelley was released the next morning.
