Cardinal Cross Country Recognized By School Board

FARMINGTON -- The Farmington cross country team was recognized as the Farmington School board met at the Performing Arts Center on March 27.

Farmington superintendent of schools Bryan Law introduced coach Scott Small and the boys and girls cross country teams. Small is in his in his second year of teaching at Farmington after teaching at Mountain Home for three years where he also coached basketball and softball. Small teaches regular and pre-AP English at Randall Lynch Middle School. In addition to teaching, he is also the head seventh grade girls basketball coach, plus serves as an assistant for the junior high girls basketball team.

Small, who completed his first year as Farmington cross country coach for grades 7-12 last fall, said he was grateful to athletic director Brad Blew for giving him an opportunity to coach the sport. According to Small, in previous years, Cardinal cross country has been coached by Beau Thompson and later by Meg Grizzelle.

Small admitted that he has been impressed with the student/athletes involved in the program, who compete in races of 3.2 miles during the season. Small wasn't sure he would like coaching the sport, but the kids won him over to where he now enjoys coaching cross country.

"It's a testament to their grit and determination cause I hate running, and these kids, they love it," Small said. "It's been a learning experience for me, and it's been a learning experience for them. They probably taught me more than I taught them."

Law said he had heard the Cardinals had good numbers and inquired as to how many kids went out for cross country.

Small replied that he began the season with 40 total kids out and ended with 27.

"From what I can tell, I think it's going to continue to grow," Small said, noting the varisty will lose only one senior boy Taylor Carboneau and one senior girl to graduation.
