LINCOLN -- During their April 17 meeting, the Lincoln school board hired a new girls basketball coach, Emilianne Slamons.

Slamons will teach some math courses at Lincoln High School and is ESL (English as a Second Language) certified. She is coming from Bentonville West High School and will be head girls basketball coach for junior high and high school at Lincoln.

Mary Ann Spears, superintendent, said, "She will be a great addition to academics as well as athletics."

Slamons graduated from Greenland High School in 2009. She has distinguished herself, receiving various awards as a teacher. Slamons was named an Arkansas Teacher Corps Fellow in 2013, and by the time she began her third year of teaching at Dermott in August of 2015, she was named Teacher-of-the-Year for 2014-2015 in the Dermott School District.

The College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas established the Arkansas Teacher Corps Fellow teacher-preparation program in 2013 to address teacher shortages based on both geographic area and content area. Slamons underwent six weeks of intensive training in the summer after being chosen for the program, which assigns teachers to high-need schools in south, central and northeast Arkansas. Applicants are required to have a bachelor's degree in any major and demonstrate academic success alongside a service orientation. Slamons was required to make a three-year commitment to the program.

At Dermott, Slamons taught math to grades 7-12, in a tiny a district with an enrollment of 415 students. Dermott is in Chicot County, in the opposite corner of the state. Mississippi lies to the east and Louisiana to the south. Slamons also coached girls basketball as well as track and field at Dermott High School. Slamons played college basketball at the University of Arkansas at Monticello before finishing her degree in mathematics at the University of Arkansas.
