State Park Plans Busy Spring Break

PRAIRIE GROVE -- If you are planning to stick around during Spring Break, Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park has a list of activities going on to keep youngsters busy, entertained and teach them a thing or two about history.

"This is what state parks do," said Laura Jennings, park interpreter. "All winter I've been building up the program, that's the hard work. Now I get to do the programs. That's the fun part."

The park's Spring Break schedule starts Friday and runs through March 26.

All activities are free, except an Historic House Tour, which costs $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, under 6 free, or $15 for family. The tour will be at 11 a.m. Friday and requires a reservation. Other events during Spring Break do not require a reservation.

Activities during the week will include programs on Civil War nature journaling, artillery demonstrations, fire building, Civil War ink and letters, Ozark folklore, black bears of Arkansas, candle making, Civil War food, Civil War archeology and flags and their meanings at the Battle of Prairie Grove.

Two special events during the last weekend of Spring Break will be a spring thaw at 11 a.m. March 25, where participants can help get the grounds ready for spring and also learn about pioneer life. There will also be a spring stroll at 3 p.m. March 26 to discover blooms and buds that come along with the promise of spring. In addition, Jennings will lead a 30-minute program on what it means to be a park interpreter at 2 p.m. on March 26.
