FARMINGTON -- Andrea Jenkins, a Farmington Public School teacher, has thrown her hat into the political arena for 2018.

Jenkins, is seeking the Washington County Justice of the Peace seat for District 10 -- which includes Farmington, rural areas around Farmington and Prairie Grove, and the southwest areas around Fayetteville near the University of Arkansas baseball stadium.

This will be her first political race. She is running as a Democrat.

Jenkins, in addition to teaching at Farmington's Jerry "Pop" Williams Elementary School, also drives a school bus. She has been a resident of Farmington for the last 12 years and is the mother of a teenage son.

She said she is not entering into the political race for politics but service to the people of District 10.

"I have pursued and committed myself to leadership roles my entire life. My desire to run for political office has always been there. I decided at the end of 2017 to find a place where I can utilize my desire to serve the public beyond the students I teach every day," Jenkins said in a prepared statement.

"I want to share and hopefully inspire my students with the example of hard work, achieving goals, and stepping up for our community. I am a strong believer in working respectfully as a team member to get things done. I have voted both sides of the aisle in past elections and I believe a person's integrity, dedication, and enthusiasm for helping others is more important than the color red or blue."

Jenkins earned her education degree from the University of Arkansas and has worked on the planning committee for the Farmington Hometown Team's Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Jenkins says when elected, residents in JP District 10 can "count on me to listen to the concerns of the community and work as their voice on the Quorum Court. I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of making some great positive changes for our citizens, our land, and our county's financial health."

The JP District 10 seat is currently being held by Robert Dennis, a Republican.
