FARMINGTON -- Coach Brad Johnson was not happy with a 27-19 scoring disparity in the fourth quarter, yet his Lady Cardinals hung on for 70-65 nonconference win over Providence Academy Jan. 30.
"They are an interesting team, they've got great length and they've got a lot of different ways to score," Johnson said.
Providence Academy 6-0 senior forward Hayley Kate Webb, who signed with Harding University in November, scored a game-high 29 points, making 11 field goals including a trio of 3-pointers. Junior guard Faith Curry added 14 points with an 8-of-10 performance at the free throw line and No. 44 junior center Jonisha Rolle (6-0) chipped in 13. Another 6-footer (6-1) senior forward Lauren Shell scored 4 points and was part of an 8-0 Lady Patriot run early in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter that cut Farmington's 18-point third quarter lead to 54-46.
"I'd like to see us be better down the stretch defensively," Johnson said. "We didn't do a good job of defensive rebounding. We've got to rebound better to advance in post season. Tonight they got 15 offensive rebounds. That's way too many. The good news is we won the game. It was a tough lesson to learn, but at least we didn't have to absorb a loss to learn it."
Both teams made 22 field goals on the night. Providence Academy had a slight edge in free-throw points (17-of-23) to 16-of-27 for Farmington. The difference was Farmington connected on 10 shots from beyond the 3-point arc while Providence Academy, a private Christian school with a Rogers campus, made four 3-pointers.
The Lady Patriots played tight on Farmington sharpshooter Madisyn Pense, but she still got open for a trio of 3-pointers. Roach and Eliza ball each made two 3-pointers while Makenna Vanzant, Camryn Journagan and Madison Parsley had one apiece. Vanzant held off the late charge by making 10-of-12 free throws all in the fourth quarter. She led Farmington with 17 points with Roach (14) and Journagan (11) also in double figures.
