Farmington Girls Wrap Up No. 1 Seed

LADY CARDINALS HOST 5A WEST THIS WEEK

FARMINGTON -- The Lady Cardinals beat Harrison, 56-35, on senior night and wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the West Division for this week's 5A West Conference tournament at Cardinal Arena.

The first half featured runs by both teams. Farmington jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, getting free throws by Makenna Vanzant, Camryn Journagan's layup on the run after Alexis Roach rebounded and threw an outlet to Vanzant. Roach's 3-pointer concluded the run.

Harrison mounted a 13-2 run to go in front, 15-9, after back-to-back scores by Peri Knight. Joelle Tidwell's layup broke the run as the first quarter ended with Harrison leading 15-11.

Farmington dominated the second quarter by outscoring Harrison 19-3. The Lady Cardinals got their full-court offense going. The first of three straight defensive rebounds by Journagan set up Madisyn Pense's assist to Roach, who used a pump-fake to let a defender sail by.

Eliza Ball, Vanzant and Pense hit 3-pointers in the last three-and-a-half minutes of the second. Audrey Culpepper's putback beat the buzzer and the Lady Cardinals took a 30-18 lead into intermission.

An 8-4 start triggered by Farmington's full-court press prompted a Harrison time-out midway through the third. By the end of the period the Lady Cardinals built a 20-point lead of 45-25 behind 8 points by Vanzant in the quarter. They were on cruise control from that point on.

Vanzant (15) and Roach (14) combined for 29 points. Claire Doshier was the only girl in double figures for Harrison with 14.

Farmington 49, Russellville 35

Farmington picked up a 49-35 road win at Russellville Feb. 13. The shots weren't falling for Farmington in the first quarter, but the Lady Cardinals compensated with solid rebounding and coming away with steals on defense. Vanzant, who went without a point in the first, scored 9 in the second beginning with a 3-pointer. She also had the last bucket of the half by driving into a crowd and scoring in the lane. Russellville had just nine points at the half and trailed, 19-9.

In the last two minutes of the third Roach hit a pair of foul shots and scored in transition. Pense nailed a trifecta as the horn sounded staking the Lady Cardinals to a 37-19 advantage as the third ended. Russellville could get no closer than 14 until Cara Davis' drive to the hoop kept the Cyclones within 47-35, but the 5-2 mini run was too little, too late.

Vanzant scored 19 and Roach added 14. Post-player Anna Meyers led Russellville with 14. No other Lady Cyclone had more than 5 points.
