Council Approves Hunter Street Bridge Contract

FARMINGTON -- The city's plan to replace North Hunter Street bridge will cost almost $150,000 and money for the project will come from the city's street bond fund.

Farmington City Council last week approved a low bid of $106,291 from N.E.C. Inc. of Rogers to serve as general contractor for the project. This bid is in addition to the culvert sections for the bridge.

The Council has already approved purchasing the culvert sections for $41,485. Each section will weigh 4 tons, according to consulting engineer David Gilbert with Plymouth Engineering in Lowell.

Gilbert said the city received three bids for the construction contract. The high bid was more than three times the bid submitted by N.E.C. Fochtman Enterprise Inc., submitted a high bid of $367,408 and Steve Beam Construction Inc. submitted a bid of $291,453.

Construction should start in 45-60 days and the contract calls for the project to be finished in 75 days, Gilbert said.

Farmington officials closed the bridge in February because of safety issues. Approaches to the bridge had been damaged because of heavy rain and the bridge was not considered safe, especially for larger vehicles.

Plans had already called for replacing the bridge with larger culverts and extending the sidewalk along the street.
