An essay on veterans written by a fifth-grader at Ledbetter Intermediate School came in second place in a state contest sponsored by the Elks Lodge,

Samantha Brye won first place in the region for her essay on the theme, "Americanism: Our Veterans." She won $75 for her first place in the region and then won an additional $150 for coming in second place in the state contest.

Brye likes to write, she said, because "you can show your imagination and be creative." She said she was interested in submitting an essay for the Elks Lodge contest because of her family members who are veterans and served the country.

She plans to spend her prize money by purchasing a new Percy Jackson book and putting some in her college fund.
