Battlefield tour

The Battle of Prairie Grove was the last major engagement in Northwest Arkansas and greatly impacted the course of the war west of the Mississippi River. Join a Park Interpreter for a walk along the ridge at Prairie Grove Battlefield. Meet at the Hindman Hall Museum.

FRIDAY, JAN. 25

Inexplicable Confusion

11:30 a.m.--12 p.m., free

General Blunt's arrival onto the field at Prairie Grove opened a new front to the battle and revived hope for a Federal victory. Join a Park Interpreter for a talk on Blunt's march to the battlefield. Meet at the west overlook.

Brother vs Brother

3:30---4 p.m., free

Putting brother against brother, the Civil War tore families apart and the Battle of Prairie Grove was no exception. Join a Park Interpreter for a talk on the Ryals Brothers, two brothers from Harrison, Ark., who fought for different sides during the war. Both boys fought at the Battle of Prairie Grove and were never more than a mile apart on the battlefield. Meet at the Borden parking area.

SATURDAY, JAN. 26

The Slaughter Pen

11:30 a.m.--12 p.m., free

The Borden apple orchard, the site where the heaviest loss of life occurred during the battle, is some of the park's most hallowed ground. Join a Park Interpreter for a talk on the Borden Orchard firefight and the tragic loss of life within. Meet at the Borden parking area.

A Medal for Honor: The Black Brothers of the 37th Illinois Infantry

3:30--4 p.m., free

Throughout military history only five pairs of brothers have won the Medal of Honor. Join a Park Interpreter for a talk about two brothers, Colonel John C. Black and Captain William P. Black, who fought with the 37th Illinois Infantry at the battles of Prairie Grove and Pea Ridge.
