FARMINGTON -- Brandy Wallace's RBI double to left in the eighth inning helped the Lady Cardinals salvage a split of a doubleheader against Vilonia on April 21.

Farmington (16-7 overall, 7-3 in 5A-West) defeated Vilonia 3-2 after dropping the opener 8-0. The games were postponed because of rain earlier in the week.

A pair of inning-ending double plays by the Lady Cardinals snuffed out scoring threats for the Lady Eagles. In the seventh, left fielder Madison Parrish made a catch and perfect throw to home plate for the first double play. In the eighth, pitcher Paige Devecsery caught a line drive and promptly threw to second base for a double play.

"The double plays were huge," said Farmington coach Randy Osnes. "We finally played with the same mentality that we've been practicing with and we actually took it to the ball field. Very proud of the effort against a very good Vilonia team."

Callie Harper helped Farmington even the score at 2-all with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Harper, who plays first base, also made a diving catch on a sacrifice bunt attempt for the first out in the seventh inning.

Vilonia (11-4, 5-1), the defending Class 5A champions, scored a run in the third inning on an error and in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Gray.

In the opener, Vilonia senior Sydney Wader struck out four while pitching a four-hit shutout.

Harper had three of the Lady Cardinals' four hits while Camryn Journagan's double accounted for the other one.
