FARMINGTON -- Farmington locked down on defense, creating three straight Alma turnovers transforming those possessions into points to begin the third quarter with 7 unanswered points.

That run spurred a strong second half as Farmington pulled away from a 23-23 halftime tie to down former 5A West foe, Alma, 60-44 Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, at Cardinal Arena.

Sophomore Trinity Johnson drew a charge, which combined with Makenna Vanzant's steal allowed the Lady Cards to gain separation on the scoreboard. Joelle Tidwell drove around a defender on the baseline for a layup. Madisyn Pense got a step and went down the lane finishing with her right hand. Trinity Johnson twice hit 3-pointers and Pense added a trey of her own to stake Farmington out to a 44-36 lead at the end of the third quarter although Alma made a 7-2 run.

Farmington responded by fashioning a 7-0 run replicating the beginning of the third quarter. Farmington found Tori Kersey alone ahead of the pack and she converted a left-handed layup. Pense busted a trifecta from the left corner and senior Alexis Roach, who scored 9 points, had a key bucket to complete a fast-break that started with Makenna Vanzant's outlet to Pense, who found Roach. Trinity Johnson, daughter of Farmington coach Brad Johnson, nailed another trifecta down the stretch.

With Alma senior Cassidy Cooper concentrating on keeping Vanzant in check, who was honored for scoring her 1,000th point the previous week in a tournament at Pottsville, Farmington spread the ball around. Vanzant scored only 5 points, marking the second time this season she has been held below double figures; but Farmington won both times.

Pense scored 14 points and Tidwell added 11. Trinity Johnson chipped in 9 and her classmate Kersey had 8.
