GIRLS

Will Pittman saw one too many defensive lapses for his liking, so he called a timeout and talked to his Gravette girls about what needed to be done.

The Lady Lions coach didn't have to do it again on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Gravette made the needed adjustments, and its defense caused numerous Lincoln turnovers en route to a 63-33 nonconference victory over the Lady Wolves.

"I had to challenge them a little bit," Pittman said. "We were a little out of position, but after we called that timeout early I was pleased with their effort and intensity. I thought our wings and our top girls worked well together, and it was effective.

"They were staying where they were supposed to be and working together. Kasandra Tajchman was our player inside; she was losing her player, and Robin Kirk is a very good player. Kasandra then made that adjustment after we talked about it. That was a big part of our defense being effective right there."

Pittman called the timeout after Kirk's basket pulled Lincoln (5-3) within 9-8 with 3 minutes, 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Shylee Morrison then scored the next seven points and pushed Gravette's lead to 16-8 before Kyle Jenkins' bucket made it a 16-10 game after one quarter.

Lincoln (5-3) managed to keep it close for another three minutes as an Abby Goldman 3-pointer made it a 25-18 game with 5:10 before halftime, but the Lady Wolves didn't score again until Gravette had forced the sportsmanship clock early in the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions closed out the first half with eight straight points, then Kaylan Chilton scored 10 points in Gravette's 14-0 third-quarter run.

"Chilton has done well for us this year," Pittman said. "She's an aggressive girl, and you want her on your team. She's as tough as they get, and you don't have to worry about her taking it to the hole. She'll draw the contact and try to get buckets."

Gabbi Scott then forced the running clock early in the fourth quarter as her steal and layup that made the score 49-18.

Chilton finished with 23 to lead Gravette, followed by Lizzy Ellis and Morrison with 12 apiece. Goldman had 14 for Lincoln, followed by Kirk with 10.
