COLUMN: Checking On Long-Distance Friends

I had been wondering how "long distance" friends and family members were doing. I don't hear from them often, so I called them.

In calling the daughter of cousin Marilyn Prescott Crittenden, I found that Marilyn is "about as usual." She has Alzheimers and most of the time she doesn't even know her husband or children. But she is really happy, the way Marilyn always was, so outgoing and fun! Her daughter said she plans to bring Marilyn here soon. Marilyn's dad, Martin Prescott and family are buried in the Beaty Cemetery northwest of Lincoln.

A life-long friend, Vernon Yeager, is still living in a "facility," as he calls it. He has his own room, but no special caretaker as he once had. His health is good, but like the rest of us, a little forgetful, and now has a very slow, hesitating speech. We had a short visit and reminisced a lot, like old times.

A special occasion is planned for Dec. 15 in the Sugar Hill Church, honoring J. C. and Christeen Albright on their 65th wedding anniversary. All friends and family are urged to attend. More details later.

The Navy intercepted a boatload of people off the Texas coast.

This placed the Navy in an awkward position as the boat was not heading to the U.S.A., but toward Mexico and Central America.

Another surprise was finding the people were white American retirement-age seniors. Their claim was they were trying to get to Central America or Southern Mexico as they wanted to return to the U.S. as immigrants. Then they would be entitled to far more benefits than they were receiving as legitimate American retirees.

It is believed the Navy gave them food, water and fuel and assisted them on their journey.

We are booking on the next boat out. Let me know if you want to join.

Happy birthday to Dick Watson, Deby Bailey, Teresa Pitts, Don Griscom.

Happy anniversary to Chris and Kim Brock.

Happy years, all!
