FARMINGTON -- Carla Gibson with Chicken Holler in Farmington gives some tips and recommendations for the fall season.

She said fall is the best time to plant bulbs, perennials, trees and shrubs.

"The growing season is over and trees and plants go dormant," Gibson said. "This gives the roots the chance to get established so they will be more acclimated to their environment in the spring."

She reminds homeowners, though, it's still important to water the newly planted trees and shrubs and to use a winter fertilizer that is good for the roots, not the top.

Pansies should be planted now before the first freeze, Gibson said.

"They are a good bedding plant that love the cool weather. You want them to get established before the cold weather."

Most people do not realize mums are perennial flowering shrubs, she said.

"You can enjoy them in a pot for the fall season and plant them in the ground when they've become ugly, and they will come back the next year," Gibson said.

Plant flower bulbs in the fall to enjoy the flowers in the spring. Gibson said these include daffodils, hyacinths and tulips.

Garden season does not end with the fall, she said. Some vegetables that will continue to grow throughout the winter are greens, such as spinach, and radishes.

Gibson said outside plants still need care in the winter, so remember to water them and provide a winter fertilizer.
