Coach Green Remembered By Players Turned Coaches

PRAIRIE GROVE -- Steve Edmiston and Jay Harper were Prairie Grove seniors when the late Mike Green became boys head basketball coach and the impact was immediate.

Harper, currently Farmington head baseball coach and defensive coordinator for football, remembers the team which included Edmiston, current Prairie Grove head boys basketball coach, as having four seniors and a sophomore as the starting five.

"What he [Coach Green] brought to the table was discipline. That was kind of lacking with the previous coaches we had," Harper said.

Harper got into a pushing match with a player from Siloam Springs in an early season game and experienced Green's discipline at that juncture.

"Coach Green benched me and I was a senior starter but he didn't budge. It wasn't that big of a pushing match but something that he didn't like," Harper said, adding, "That [discipline] really helped us."

While Green had been coaching Prairie Grove's girls basketball teams for several years prior this was his first season with the boys and the 1986-1987 Tigers responded
