Lincoln Lifestyles

Finally, back to remembering "back when" around the Lincoln square:

On the corner of Park and Main Streets, where the Legion Hall and the Senior Center now stand, was once the Lincoln Lumber Company, owned by the Huenefeld family. I don't know when it was first built, but I do remember on Christmas evening, Dec. 25, either 1943 or '44, part of the building burned. Rebuilding, they stayed in business, retiring many years later.

Across the street North, in 1942, it was an apple packing shed. I think it was owned by the Rodgers brothers, ( I remember working there.)

Later, James Kidd owned a laundromat there. John and Mona Carte ran a business called the Fabric Patch for sometime. Next, Joe Asher built a secondhand store there.

In 1981, Ricky Murray bought the building and for 35 years has served the community with a full stock of used merchandise, much of it as good as new. In 2005 they suffered the loss by fire, but quickly rebuilt.

The first I remember about the dry cleaning business, the Frazier family owned it, then Cosby family, then Carmie Curtis owned it for sometime (during the '60's) Clara Bateman then ran it for several years, until she retired some years ago. It now sets empty, as any others on the square.

At one time there were 10 or more thriving businesses on the west side of the square, now only three.

If anyone knows of something I have missed on these reports, or an error, please call.

Happy birthday to: Carol Pitts, Jeremy Lewis, Cathy Wiseman, Brian Freeman, Paige Przyszezypkewsk, Gavin Pitts, Glinda Tollett, Allee Lipford, Ann Chambliss, Becky Griscom, Betty Pharr, Keith Lipford, Nicky Morris, Robert Curtsinger.
