School Receives Bids To Remodel Cafeteria

LINCOLN -- Lincoln School Board has multiple bids to choose from in selecting a contractor to remodel the middle school cafeteria.

The school district received 13 proposals and packets were made available to board members prior to their Jan. 19 meeting. Board members will look over the bids before meeting again to make a decision.

Mary Ann Spears, superintendent, noted the cafeteria is 50 years old.

"The space in our cafeteria is way outdated," Spears said.

The renovation project should start in May and take about three months to complete. Improvements will include new floors, new paint, dropping the ceiling, upgraded lighting, re-configuring the kitchen to make it more efficient and new furnishings.

Some of the companies that submitted bids included C.R. Crawford Construction, East Harding, Nabholz, Pick-It Construction, Day Co., Flintco and Crossland Construction.

The project is estimated to cost $700,000-$800,000. The state's Division of Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation has allocated $347,967 in partnership funds for the project and Spears told the board she plans to contest that amount and ask for additional money.

"They said we could come and argue," Spears said. "I plan to make an appointment next month and try to get us more money."

January is National School Board Recognition Month and Spears thanked board members for their service to the district.

"We recognize you and appreciate you and are glad you're serving us and our students in Lincoln Consolidated District," Spears told the board.

Spears said she was pleased with the progress of the school's budget for the year, noting the district is on track to meet and exceed budget. She added that she believes the school will be able to transfer money into the district's building fund in June.

For the 2014-15 school year, Lincoln has received $7.2 million in revenue through December 2014. Expenses through December 2014 are about $6.8 million.

Spears said next month a representative of Stephens Inc., was scheduled to address the board about refinancing three bond issues to save money through lower interest rates.

Following executive session, the board voted to approve the resignation of Ashley January, an elementary special education teacher, and two cafeteria employees.
