Ice Quakes Added To List Of Weird Weather

Regarding last week's report on the quilt's winner at the Senior Center, the "Belinda" winning the quilt was our own Belinda Beasley, one of our librarians. She is really happy with it, made with her favorite colors.

Our ever changing Arkansas weather has also been full of surprises. Six years ago, the devastating ice storm damaged trees, still evidenced today; then we had earthquakes. Two years ago on Christmas Day, "snowstorms," snow with thunder and lightning and then last year on March 2, we had an unheard of sleet storm of 6- to 10-inches of sleet and ice. Now, on Thursday, Feb. 19, there were "ice-quakes" in Northeast Arkansas, the first in the mid South. They are common up north, especially around the Great Lakes area. Ice quakes are due to rapidly freezing water underground that expands, causing sonic booms and explosions but they are not dangerous. We wonder what surprises come next, and "What Global Warming?"

A recent Tuesday was another fun day as the Lincoln Kitchen Band visited the Fayetteville Senior Center. Their members joined in the fun, and about 15 joined for the chicken-dance. Their applause was also encouraging. We also had time for a quick visit with former neighbor Brian Weaver on our way out. He regularly attends the Fayetteville Center for games and recreation.

March is a quiet month, as far as special holidays go. There is St. Patrick's Day, and of course, the day to begin "Daylight Saving Time," and for the month, we can observe Red Cross month, crafts, ideas, optimism, expect success, collision awareness, music in our schools, umbrella, poison awareness, peanut, frozen foods, nutrition, caffeine awareness, and mirth month.

An early reminder, mark your calendar for April 11, the date for the Hee Haw Show at the Lincoln Senior Center. More on this later.
