Board Considering Recommendation For Head Football Coach

LINCOLN -- With rumors circulating about the identity of just who Lincoln will choose as their next head football coach, Lincoln athletic director Deon Birkes declined to comment on Monday.

Birkes did confirm a recommendation has been made to the school board and said when the Board makes a decision the school will announce a hiring. On Saturday, the Arkansas Activities Association tweeted that Lincoln had hired Newport head football coach Don Harrison to take over their football program. Birkes neither confirmed nor denied that but a posting on Fearless Friday indicated the same as well as a job opening for the head coaching position at Newport.

Harrison has guided Newport to state playoff berths in 2013 and 2014 going 17-6 over that time span. He previously served as offensive coordinator from 2011-2012 and was offensive coordinator at Mena in 2010. Prior to that Harrison led Greenwood's junior high program to a 36-2-1 record and four consecutive River Valley Conference championships from 2006-2009.

Birkes received many applications after the opening was posted on the school's website on March 30 with a job description stating that Lincoln is looking for a great P.R. guy. Somebody who will sell the program, as a self-motivated, good Public Relations person to motivate kids and to sell the Lincoln Wolves Football Program to the school and community.
