Council Fills Vacancy

Prairie Grove City Council on Monday appointed former Alderwoman Marquita Smith to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of council member Justin Clark.

Clark, who represented Ward 4, Position 1, submitted a letter of resignation May 5 after moving out of the city limits, according to Mayor Sonny Hudson.

Clark defeated Smith, who was the incumbent, in the Nov. 2014 general election and took office in January. Since taking office, Clark has only attended one meeting. He was absent in February, March and April.

Smith and local resident Jeff Hays expressed an interest in filling the vacancy.

Alderman Dale Reed made the motion to appoint Smith to the position, explaining he recommended her because she ran for the position in November 2014 and her name was on the ballot.

Reed encouraged Hays to stay involved in the city and to run for City Council next election if he is still interested in serving as an alderman.
