Single Purple Blossom Brings Needed Cheer

Sixty some years ago, I sowed purple petunia seeds in our first garden, and each year, they seeded back, so I only had to leave them in each row among the vegetables. I was told that they would eventually revert to all white blossoms. Not if I could help it! Each time a white or light color flower boomed, I pulled and discarded that plant. They are now mostly purple, some a dark, velvety color.

When the utilities came through, they destroyed all garden efforts, but the petunias surprised me by appearing in the yard later, even in some planters.

Recently, I was cleaning out the flower beds, afraid I might destroy some volunteer plants, as it was late, and growing season; but among the early weeds, there was one lone purple blossom!

On a spindly, evidently dead stalk, was some greenery, and this bright bit of purple sunshine.

This day I'd had frustrations and disappointments, and was working out those bad feelings with my favorite Spring pastime, working outside; and this little bit of lovely purple just-made-my-day! I thought, if this persistent little plant could withstand winter's storms, and still bloom, I could remember "a cheerful countenance makes a happy heart." I still believe in miracles, and yes, an encouraging message from a tiny flower.

I think if I had cleaned out the beds earlier as I thought I should, I would have discarded the "dead stalk," and would have missed this great surprise. There has been so much illness in the area, some major surgeries, flu, and oh, those allergy related problems! Our prayers, and best wishes for fast and complete healing for each and everyone.
