Coach Finds Bright Spot In Week

PRAIRIE GROVE -- In what has been a challenging week for Prairie Grove High School with the passing of Jarren Sorters, son of assistant principal Joey Sorters, new Prairie Grove volleyball coach Mat Stewart found a bright spot Thursday.

Hours after getting the news of Jarren's passing, Stewart learned Farmington junior Ella Wilson has received medical clearance to play volleyball. Stewart was head girls basketball coach at Shiloh Christian when Wilson collapsed on the bench during a junior high girls basketball game with Farmington playing against the Saints in Springdale in January of 2015.

Her heart stopped beating but she was revived through use of a defibrillator. Farmington junior high girls basketball coach Jessica McCollough called for help and emergency medical equipment on scene was used to jump-start Wilson's heart as an off-duty doctor ran to courtside.

Farmington volleyball coach Marshall Ward confirmed Aug. 9 that Wilson would play middle hitter in a reserve role for Monday's benefit volleyball match between Farmington and Prairie Grove. That match was played after the deadline for this week's issue.

Stewart said he was thankful Wilson was getting to play.

NOTE: The benefit match story will be in next week's issue.
