Two candidates are running for Lincoln City Council's Ward 2, Position 1 in the Nov. 8 General Election.

Lincoln City Council member Troy Myers, 51, is seeking his third term in office and Doug Curtsinger, 56, a former City Council member, is challenging him for the position.

Myers is a graduate of Lincoln High School and has lived in Lincoln for 31 years. He graduated from the Naval Nuclear Power School, earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of New Haven in New Haven, Conn., and an associate's degree in nuclear engineering technology from Thomas Edison State College, Trenton, N.J.

Myers is energy production supervisor at Flint Creek Power Plant for SWEPCO and has worked for SWEPCO for 12 years.

His prior work experience includes working as a fleet manager for J.B. Hunt and serving 20 years with the U.S. Navy Submarine Force. Myers retired from the Navy in 2003 as a Master Chief Petty Officer.

He is a member of Prairie Grove First Baptist Church and a member of the United States Submarine Veterans. Myers started the first club in Northwest Arkansas, called the USS Snook Base.

Curtsinger has lived in Lincoln all his life, except for a short time in Fayetteville. He has worked in manufacturing during his adult life, with many years of management experience. Presently, he works as a machinist.

Myers said his experience in leadership positions both in the military and in civilian life benefit him as a member of Lincoln City Council.

He said he is running for re-election because of an appreciation for his roots in the community of Lincoln.

"I desire to do my part in continuing to make Lincoln a great place for families," Myers wrote in a candidate's profile from.

He points to recent accomplishments made by the City Council. These include a new, modern public library, new and upgraded city parks, Lincoln Community Garden and upgraded fire and police equipment.

"I desire to continue serving on the Lincoln City Council to continue improvements such as these in our town," Myers said.

Curtsinger served on Lincoln City Council during the 1990s, up until 2004.

"I have many years of management experience," Curtsinger wrote. "I think Lincoln is going good but we have to maintain that. And always try to make improvements."

If elected, Curtsinger said his goals include better roads, more sidewalks and a water park.

"I want Lincoln to be a great place to live for the future," he said.

Myers' goals, if elected, are to help Lincoln grow into the future to attract new businesses and to improve Lincoln's financial position while improving infrastructure. Examples included, he said, are to continue street improvements and building sidewalks as money allows. He also would like to see continued improvements of city parks and the Lincoln Lake area.

He points to the many strengths of living in Lincoln: Lincoln Public Library, Lincoln Lake, the school district and the fact that Lincoln is a close-knit community.

Myers shared one final message about himself as a candidate: "The most important part of my life is my faith in God and loving my family. I have been married for nearly 32 years to Patricia. We have two children, Eric and Tara. We have all graduated from Lincoln High School. Patricia and I are proud to call Lincoln home."
