Farmington Purchases New Police Car

FARMINGTON -- Farmington City Council approved a request to purchase a new police car and gave its support for a local law enforcement grant at its March 13 meeting.

The Council also approved an ordinance to rezone about one acre at 12268 W. Highway 62 from single family residential to C-2, highway commercial, to construct a 3,200-square-foot warehouse. The request was made by Jim and Rebecca Ayers, owners of Ayers Drywall Business, and the warehouse would be used for the drywall business.

Farmington Planning Commission gave its OK for the rezoning request at its Feb. 27 meeting.

Farmington's new police car will be a 2017 Dodge Charger and the purchase of the vehicle is already budgeted for 2017. Estimated cost is $35,000.

The police department will apply for a $3,500 law enforcement grant through the state. If approved, the money will be used to purchase a radar for a patrol unit and a new protective vest for the department's new officer.

In other action, the Council approved a resolution to establish procedural rules for City Council meetings. The state of Arkansas requires each City Council to establish procedural rules on an annual basis.

Farmington's rules follow those from an Arkansas Municipal League publication called "Procedural Rules for the Municipal Official." In addition to these rules, Farmington also has a public comment period at the beginning of each Council meeting.

Farmington continues to see an increase in its sales tax revenues. For February, the city received $61,862 from its 1-cent sales tax, compared to $58,889 in February 2016. Revenue from the county sales tax also was up in February, compared to a year ago. In 2016, Farmington received about $101,500 from the county sales tax and for February 2017, the city received about $105,000.
