FARMINGTON -- Freshman golfer Rhett South shot a 74 during the State 4A Golf meet held at Sage Meadows Country Club in Jonesboro on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018.
South finished in a three-way tie for second place with Jackson May, of Pulaski Academy, and Daniel Davis, of Mena, behind State 4A medalist Devyn Pappas, a junior from Valley View, who got off to a hot start with birdies on 4 of the first 5 holes and finished with a 69.
Farmington's varsity, made up of four freshmen, including Landon Lawson, 86; Clayton Antwine, 108; and Dakota Bogan, 109, didn't shoot as well as they did in winning district with a team score of 249 two weeks earlier. The Cardinals placed eighth among 12 teams.
None-the-less, South earned the No. 2 seed at the State Golf Overall tournament at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock. South birdied the second playoff hole to edge out Jackson, who also advanced to the Overall. Davis was eliminated on the first playoff hole.
During 4A State play, South hit into a double bogey, but rallied with back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and 17. State Boys 4A golf was held at the Sage Meadows Golf Course in Jonesboro on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 2-3, 2018. Valley View High School served as tournament host. A practice round was held on Monday, Oct. 1, to enable golfers to get familiar with the course.
